Ali Koç Defends Fenerbahçe Official in Galatasaray Derby Case

Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç testified as a witness in the trial of former Fenerbahçe board member Selahattin Baki, who is accused of insulting Galatasaray board member Eray Yazgan following the heated Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby in the 37th week of the Trendyol Süper Lig last season.

The first hearing at the Istanbul 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance was attended by the defendant and the lawyers of both parties.

Baki’s Defense

In his defense, Baki stated that at the time of the incident, he was ‘s football department manager and press spokesperson, giving him authorized access to all areas of the stadium. He explained that Fenerbahçe won the match and, after ‘s had left, the players and staff went onto the pitch to celebrate, joined by .

Baki claimed that Galatasaray officials attempted to prevent the celebration. He further stated:

“As we were heading towards the tunnel to leave the stadium, I saw blood on our president’s hand, presumably due to the scuffle. At that moment, I saw and heard four Galatasaray officials, including Eray Yazgan, swearing at the president while pointing fingers at him. In response, I used strong language, telling them not to make hand gestures at our president.”

Baki denied directing his words specifically at Yazgan and admitted that Ali Koç was displeased with his reaction.

Ali Koç’s Testimony

As a witness, Fenerbahçe explained:

“As with any winning , we wanted to take photos and celebrate. However, due to interference from the opposing side, altercations occurred. The alleged incident happened while we were leaving the field. I was trying to calm everyone down amidst the shouting and tension. However, I did not hear any insults directed at us or from our side towards them. When the shouting intensified, I turned around and saw Baki behind me, so I warned him to stay calm.”

Court Decision and Indictment Details

The court ruled that witnesses Mesut Erbil and Filiz Umur, who did not attend the hearing, would be forcibly brought in for the next session. The trial was postponed to address missing details.

According to the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the celebrations led to clashes between both sides. Following a complaint from Eray Yazgan’s lawyer, an investigation was launched, and video evidence allegedly confirmed that Baki insulted Yazgan.

Baki faces a prison sentence of between 3 months 15 days and 2 years 4 months on charges of “insult.” The indictment also notes that, although insults are subject to reconciliation, the parties failed to reach an agreement.
