Levent Mercan on Mourinho: “He’s Truly The Special One”

Levent Mercan, who plays for Fenerbahçe, gave important statements to Transfermarkt.

TRANSFER TO FENERBAHÇE

“If Fenerbahçe wants you, you don’t think too much, you accept immediately. It was a great honor for me. The transfer process went very smoothly, which was fantastic. It turned out to be a great move from my perspective. My whole family supports Fenerbahçe, especially my father, who is a die-hard fan. We felt this all the time growing up. Now, playing here is truly an amazing feeling.”

“MOURINHO ALWAYS TRUSTED ME”

“I wanted to continue from where I left off at Karagümrük. I came here with great excitement and, to be honest, I thought things would develop a little differently. But since it was my first season, I didn’t put too much pressure on myself. The team, the coach, the environment—everything was new. Even though I didn’t get much playing time at first, our coach always trusted me. I waited for my chance, it came, and I took it.”

“FENERBAHÇE IS INCREDIBLE”

“It’s a completely different level. I have endless respect for Karagümrük, they gave me so much, but this place is unbelievable. The fans, the atmosphere—everything is huge. I played for a big club like Schalke in Germany, but here I’m having a completely different experience. In every match, home or away, the stands are packed, and the atmosphere is incredible for all 90 minutes.”

TITLE CHANCES

“Galatasaray still has some tough games ahead, so we must keep believing in ourselves. Our sporting goal is clear, and we have exceptional quality in our squad. Anything is possible in football, and we will see how it ends. We want to be champions for the club and the fans. I wish for this more for everyone who always supports us than for ourselves.”

Working with him and fulfilling his demands is a big motivation for me. I think he has similarities to Norbert Elgert. Both are coaches who expect a lot. Mourinho trusted me and gave me an opportunity, and I don’t want to waste it. In fact, thanks to Norbert Elgert’s strict discipline, I felt more prepared to work with a great coach like Mourinho.”

“I’M NOT TOO BOTHERED ABOUT NOT BEING IN THE EUROPEAN SQUAD”

“Of course, I would have liked to be part of the Europa League squad, but selecting the European squad is not an easy process. Special rules come into play. I’m not dwelling on it too much, it’s in the past now. But next season, I definitely want to be involved in Europe.”
