“The season is going well for us”
Starting his words with a general assessment of the season so far, Edin Dzeko said, “The season is going well for us so far. We are currently first in the league and the Conference League. Of course, these are the things we wanted. This is where we want to be. We won a lot of matches at the beginning of the season. In the last matches, we have 2 losses and 1 draw. Football is like that. No team in the world can win every match. There will be such matches. What matters is what you did wrong, what you can do better after such defeats. You need to see these so that the next match is different and a victory. You can turn the negative into positive,” he said.
“Every player in our team is very important”
Regarding his own performance, which included 12 goals and 5 assists in 16 matches, the experienced striker said, “Individual performance is related to the team’s performance. When the team is good, it is normal for individual performances to increase. When the team wins, the players who score goals are usually talked about. But in our team, there are many players of equal importance. They have different roles. Fans may not always see these, but we see them on the field. Every player in our team is very important. The season is going well for us so far, but there is still a long way to go. We need to continue like this. We haven’t achieved anything yet, but we are doing well. After the international break, we will enter a new month, and it may be the most important month within the months we have played so far because we have important matches, including the Super Cup. I hope that the players who stayed here during the international break have rested well, and I hope that the players who went to national teams return without getting too tired because we need everyone. “Heavy match schedule is part of big teams”
Commenting on the busy match schedule after the international break, Dzeko said, “A busy schedule is part of our job, part of big teams. Big teams play every match to win and compete in Europe as well. Therefore, you have to play another match 3 or 4 days later. I think this is normal for players who are used to it. For us, this is part of the game, and every match we play is important for us. Now we have reached the end of the group stage in the Conference League. We have 2 matches ahead, and finishing the group in the first place is very important for us because when you finish in the first place, you skip a round in February or March, and you have played 2 fewer matches. Playing fewer matches is always better. Every match we play in the league is very important. Regardless of the opponent, every match is 3 points. Therefore, every match we will play is very important,” he said.
“It is normal for people to try to create negative things”
Regarding the team’s atmosphere, Dzeko said, “There is currently a good atmosphere in our team. When the team wins, it is normal for people to try to create negative things from the outside. I think we are bigger than that. We are all here for the same goal. We respect each other mutually. As I mentioned, people can try to bring in some negative situations, but if we are a big team, we should know how to overcome it, push it away. The season has just started, we have a long way to go. We need to be united. We also need to be prepared for such things. This is a very big and traditional club. We have great players. Yes, we had missing players in the squad, but we have a lot of quality players who can fill their places and help the team when they are not there. We have enough solutions within the team. “Every team here wants to play football”
Talking about the competition in the Super Lig, the striker said, “It is difficult for me to compare with the leagues I played in because I played in many different leagues. Generally, I can say it is a good league here. If I compare it with Serie A, the last league I played in, football there is a bit more tactical. It is a bit harder to get through the defenses of Italian teams. But if I evaluate what I have seen in the Turkish League so far, it is a very good league. Every team here wants to play football. They want to build the game from the back. This can sometimes create difficulties for them because when they make a mistake while building the game from the back, they can concede a goal. The positive thing is that coaches and teams here try to implement this on the field and play football. We see that coaches also give importance to this. Teams can sometimes give away spaces, then the match is played like 5 against 5, 10 against 10, but these are part of football. What is important for us is to dominate the matches we play and never give away too much space. Another important thing for us is not to say ‘the match is over for us’ when we fall behind. Of course, the aim in football is to score goals, but sometimes you also concede goals. When you concede a goal, you should continue to stay positive so that you can turn the match around,” he said.
“We need the support of our fans”
Finally, when asked for a message to the fans, Edin Dzeko said, “I can say this to our fans; there is a positive atmosphere in the team right now. Everyone in the team believes. Both in the matches we played at home and away, I see that our fans believe in us. I want them to continue like this. Our team is ready. We work very hard every day. We want to give our 100% not only in matches but also from the beginning to the end of the week. We want to give our 100% in every match so that we think this is the most important. After all, we are the warriors of the Fenerbahçe emblem. We can only achieve our goal if we are united. We need their support. When we make mistakes or when we don’t play well, we also need their support because we need to be together in difficult times.
