Fenerbahçe and Kasımpaşa Withdraw from Ziraat Turkish Cup: Official Statement Sent to TFF
Fenerbahçe and Kasımpaşa have decided not to participate in the 2024-25 Ziraat Turkish Cup. Both clubs have reportedly submitted official letters to the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) regarding their decision.
As the 4th round matches of the Ziraat Turkish Cup concluded, a significant development emerged. According to a report by HT Spor, both Fenerbahçe and Kasımpaşa informed the TFF of their decision to abstain from the tournament.
NO REPRESENTATIVES AT THE DRAW
It has been revealed that neither club wishes to compete in the Turkish Cup under the current conditions. Additionally, the TFF has yet to respond to their decision. Both teams will refrain from sending representatives to the draw. Kasımpaşa’s decision is reportedly due to insufficient financial revenue from the competition.
FENERBAHÇE’S EARLIER SIGNALS
As previously noted, Fenerbahçe hinted at this move last season when they fielded their U-19 team in the Super Cup final as a form of protest and withdrew from the match in the 1st minute. It was suggested at the time that Fenerbahçe might opt out of the Turkish Cup altogether.
MECNUN OTYAKMAZ RESPONDS
Speaking after the Ziraat Turkish Cup 5th round draw at the TFF Riva Hasan Doğan National Teams Training and Education Facilities, TFF Vice President Mecnun Otyakmaz commented on the situation. He described the tournament as a shortcut to securing a spot in European competitions.
Addressing the rumors about Fenerbahçe and Kasımpaşa’s withdrawal, Otyakmaz stated:
“I just learned about this. So, I don’t have a definitive opinion yet. We’ll discuss it upstairs. If such an intention exists, I believe the situation can be resolved through proper dialogue.”
Highlighting the challenges of a long and grueling league season, Otyakmaz added:
“The Turkish Cup offers a shorter path compared to the league. We’ve completed the 5th round draw, and it appears that teams from the same cities will face each other in four matches. While this could be considered a twist of fate, it has worked out well for some teams, as it saves them from winter travel. We wish all teams a smooth and trouble-free round.”
Otyakmaz also reminded attendees that after this round, the competition will transition to a group stage format. He explained:
“Following this round, 19 teams will advance, along with the 5 teams participating in European competitions, creating a 24-team league system similar to European tournaments. This is a first-time implementation, and it will bring a new level of excitement.”
